The Many Choices In Kitchen Countertops

By Anthony Green

There are many choices for kitchen countertops, it can be a confusing exercise if one is not prepared with a budget and design. Some popular materials one can choose from are stainless steel, granite, tile, wood, or concrete.

For a luxurious feel granite is a great option. It is expensive but it is durable and heat resistant. Granite requires sealing one to two times a year to maintain its finish. Care should be taken with cleaning by using gentle products.

Less expensive than granite is wood. This material is great for a county look or something more rustic. As it is natural one needs to be careful about cutting on it. It can experience water damage and hot pots and pans can burn it. A cutting board should be used when cutting meats and poultry to avoid bacterial contamination.

For a truly custom look concrete is a great material. It has an urban edge to it and works well in modern settings. The expense for this material is in the labor to install it and it will need to be resealed bi-annually to retain its finish. Concrete can also crack.

Concrete is affordable and can be colored to match any design. Installation can be expensive and it must be resealed once or twice annually to prevent staining and maintain the finish. Concrete can crack as well.

A classic option is tile. It is available in stone, glass, metal, and ceramic. It is an inexpensive option that is durable and easy to clean. Resealing is required once or twice a year to keep it looking great. One problem with it is that it can develop cracks and the grout can discolor.

Installing new kitchen countertops can be fun. Stick to the budget and design to help with the selection of material. It will add a lot of value to the home when it comes time to sell.
